Poem: The Big Day

The Big Day
by Me

There's a wedding today
in a small town's white church
The pews are packed with an ocean of those
loved ones who have come to see
The lucky couple gets married today.
Chubby cheeked boys with chocolate stains on their shirts
wonder why anyone would want to marry an icky girl
Cherubic pig-tailed girls sigh and imagine
Their very own special day
Everyone smiling, admiring how fine everything is;
The grand white Steinway just off the stage,
The white rose petals strewn down the aisle
Garden trellis behind the fine couple
Simple, yet traditional. A testament to their love.
The groom standing proud in his shiny black tailcoat;
White bow tie and vest, with top hat in hand
His bride a white beacon, with shimmering vale,
trailing satin on the rose petal path.
She examines her groom and loves what she sees,
From his gaunt, fleshless face and empty eye sockets.
Green bones with, taut fleshropes, dangling on his neck.
Porous yellow jaw barely moving in a horrible mimic of speech.
His vows to her unspoken, no vocal cords left.
As a stray stream of dirt trickles from his leg
a few sickly worms escape from his corpse,
wriggling frantically-unnoticed- towards the
loving audience in the pews.
The portly Irish priest steps forward to begin the Holy matrimony.
"Welcome family, friends, and Loved ones.
Thank you for coming today to witness the joining of these two zombies
In eternal living dead matrimony."
Camera bulbs flash from the pews
handkerchiefs of lace are dabbed at the eyes
of misty women here and there.
Proud Uncles and Cousins puff up their chests,
their eyes moist too,
at this time of love.
The vale is lifted, revealing a sucked up dry mummy-doll
Skin of gray tissue.
Zombie Bride.
They look so perfect together.
Stiffly, bride and groom bend towards each other
limbs cracking and creaking
dirt and dust dripping from
sleeves and dress
Lipless grimace presses to fleshless jaw as they embrace.
Stale stench of a death exhale passes between them.
"Hooray!" The people yell together.
"Hooray, Hooray!" Happiness and cheer.
Small white daisies, roses, and dead rats are
thrown into the air as
The dead couple shamble
Away to start their death
together
